Know exactly what comes out of your kitchen tap

And stop paying for bottled water to get around it.

You're probably here for one of a few reasons. Your tap water tastes or smells of chlorine. Your kettle keeps furring up. You're buying bottled water every week and wondering if there's a better way. Or you have a baby, an older house, or simply a question you can't shake: what's actually in this water?

That's a good question to ask. Here's the honest answer.

What's in UK tap water

UK tap water is treated to make it safe from germs. That treatment, and the pipes it travels through, mean it still carries things you may not want to drink:

  • Chlorine and chloramine are added on purpose to disinfect the water. They're the reason for that swimming-pool taste.
  • Trihalomethanes (THMs) form when chlorine reacts with natural matter in the water. They are regulated by law because of their health risks.
  • PFAS ("forever chemicals") are being tested for across England and Wales. There is still no legal limit for them in UK tap water, only a guideline from the regulator.
  • Lead is toxic. Homes built before 1970 may still have lead pipes carrying their drinking water, and the water company is only responsible for the pipe up to your property boundary.

Water that meets the legal limit is not the same as clean water. The limits are a minimum standard. They don't tell you that nothing else is there.

What that means in your home

It's the water you drink. It's what goes into the pasta pot, the morning coffee and the baby's bottle feeds. It's the glass of water by the bed. A few litres a day, every day, for years.

You can't change what reaches your house. You can change what comes out of your tap.

The answer: Carico Single-Tap Water Filtration

A filter on your kitchen tap that cleans the water you drink and cook with, right at the point you use it. It goes on the countertop or under the sink, with no electricity, no storage tank and no wasted water.

How it works:

  1. Precision ceramic filtration, 0.2 microns. A dense ceramic barrier blocks particles 5,000 times smaller than a human hair, including bacteria, cysts and micro-organisms.
  2. Catalytic carbon and advanced resin core. Breaks down and holds back chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, pesticides, VOCs, THMs, heavy metals and microplastics.
  3. Compressed coconut carbon (15″ and 20″ cartridges) catches what's left and extends the life of the unit.
What it targets Carico's stated reduction
Bacteria, viruses, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, E. coli, Salmonella 99.99999%
Chlorine, chloramine, THMs, chloroform, lead, microplastics, VOCs, pesticides, herbicides, glyphosate, MTBE/BTEX over 99%
Heavy metals, cadmium 98%
PFAS ("forever chemicals") over 97%
Mercury 96.2%
Arsenic, sulfides over 90%
Fluoride over 80% on standard cartridges, 100% with the fluoride cartridge
Bad taste, odour and colour 100%

It keeps the natural minerals in the water.

What you'll notice: cleaner, fresher taste, no chlorine smell, more confidence in the water you drink and cook with, and no more need for bottled water.

Proof

  • Independent lab tested: a cartridge challenged with 300 litres of water containing E. coli and Staphylococcus showed no breakthrough, a 99.9999% reduction.
  • Designed and made by Carico, helping families live healthier lives since 1967.
  • Made in the USA from food-grade 18/10 stainless steel.

Your questions, answered

Is it worth the cost? It works out at pennies per gallon over the life of a cartridge, with no plastic bottles and nothing to carry home.

Will it fit my kitchen? Yes. It goes on the countertop or under the sink, and your plumbing doesn't need major changes. We confirm the fit before installing.

How much upkeep is there? One cartridge change every 12, 18 or 24 months, depending on the size you choose: 10″ (2 stages, 12+ months), 15″ (3 stages, 18+ months) or 20″ (4 stages, 24+ months). It takes minutes.

Do I need this, or would something smaller do? That's exactly what the free home water test is for. We'll test your water, look at your home and how you use water, and tell you honestly.

Who installs it? We do. Vitalix delivers and professionally installs on the same day. Nothing is shipped separately.
